【TRY – 1209】13D12N Eastern Turkey with Glimpses of Istanbul and Cappadocia – the Great Historical Turkey

DAY 1    ISTANBUL – GOBEKLITEPE – SANLIURFA

Your arrival at the Istanbul Airport will be followed by an early morning domestic flight to Urfa. We will drive for about 25 minutes from Urfa to Gobeklitepe, the world’s oldest religious construction that was built in 10,000 BCE. You will get to explore the Ataturk Dam, the world’s 4th largest dam in the world. The legendary pool of sacred fish, Saliurfa Balikligol, is another important part of this day as Jews and Muslims believe Balikligol to be the place where Nimrud threw Prophet Abraham into the fire. We will explore the surrounding religious places like the Halil-ur Rahman Mosque and the birthplace of Prophet Abraham – Maqam-i Ibrahim (Cave of Prophet Abraham). Ruins of Islam’s first university called Harran are also present that we will be exploring before staying the night at Sanliurfa.

DAY 2    SANLIURFA – ADIYAMAN

We will travel to Adiyaman after breakfast at the hotel in Sanliurfa, which will take around one hour and four minutes. The Ataturk Dam, one of the biggest dams in the world, will be the location of our picture stop. We’ll ride in a minibus to Nemrut Mountain, where we’ll see a breathtaking sunset. You will also get to enjoy great walks on the peak of the mountain and see the huge statues of the Commagene Kingdom. We’ll return to the hotel for supper, and an overnight stay at Adiyaman after these stops.

DAY 3    ADIYAMAN – DIYARBAKIR

After breakfast at the hotel in Diyarbakir, we will drive for around 2 hours and 40 minutes from Adiyaman to Diyarbakir. You can explore the Diyarbakir Fortress here. It is one of the longest defensive walls in the world and is often compared to the Great Wall of China. You can take great pictures on these spots and stay the night at Diyarbakir.

DAY 4    DIYARBAKIR – VAN

This morning, depart early from Diyarbakir and go to the North East, stopping to see the Akdamar Church along the way close to Van. To go to Akdamar Island in Lake Van, we will board a small boat. The biggest lake in both Turkey and the Armenian Highlands is Lake Van. The Cathedral of the Holy Cross, also known as Akdamar Church, is a medieval Armenian Apostolic cathedral that was first constructed as a palatine church for the Vaspurakan monarchs and afterward used to house the Catholicosate of Akdamar. Visit Van Castle, a sizable stone stronghold constructed by Urartu’s ancient kingdom between the 9th and 7th centuries BC.

DAY 5    VAN – DOGUBEYAZIT

We will depart for the Iranian border town of Dogubeyazit. The Ararat Mountain’s beauty will be seen to us from a distance. Follow that by going to Ishak Pasha, one of the largest and most sophisticated palace complexes in the world. Then, we’ll keep on to Kars, a city perched above a series of steep cliffs. Then, in the late afternoon, we shall stroll around Kars’ bazaars to experience the Eastern ambiance.

DAY 6    DOGUBEYAZIT - KARS

After breakfast, we go to Ani, one of the towns that were evacuated when the Turkish government welcomed Muslim Greeks into its country. Due to the lack of habitation since that time, the village now resembles a ghost town despite having exquisite stone carvings.

DAY 7    KARS – ERZURUM

Visit the Grand Mosque of Erzurum by driving from Kars to Erzurum in about 2 hours and 50 minutes. The mosque is designed in the traditional Seljuk pre-Ottoman rectangular style. Visit the Ifte Minareli Medrese (Twin Minaret Madrasa), a late Seljuk architectural landmark in Erzurum City. The Twin Minaret Madrasa, which was built as a theological institution a few years before 1265, gets its name from the two fluted minarets that top its imposing façade.

DAY 8    ERZURUM – TRABZON

Visit Karaca Cave on the way to Trabzon. Stalactites, stalagmites, and travertines are just a few of the many dripstone formations that abound in this cave in all various sizes, forms, and colors. Then go to the Sumela Monastery, which is a Mary-centered Greek Orthodox monastery. It seems to be a nine-story skyscraper suspended in the clouds and perched above a forest from a mountain’s slope.

DAY 9    TRABZON – AMASYA – SAMSUN

We will go to the ancient town of Amasya in the morning since it was crucial to the founding of the Republic of Turkey during the time of transition after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. This village, which is sandwiched between two tall mountains, is well known for the royal rock tombs it has carved into the sides of the mountains. The Maidens Museum, the Clock Tower, the Amasya Tower, a stroll along the Green River, the Statue of Strabon, the History Master, and the Amasya wooden homes will all be on our itinerary as we explore the city. The Beyazit Mosque, a historically significant mosque from the 15th century in Amasya, was constructed in 1486 on the Sultan Bayezid II of the Ottoman Empire’s orders. Drive up to Samsun in the north after that.

DAY 9    SAMSUN - DIVRIGI – KANGAL – SIVAS

We will go by car to Divrigi, an area of Anatolia that the Turks captured at the start of the 11th century. Discover the Divrii Great Mosque and Hospital, a mosque and hospital complex constructed in 1228–1229 by the Mengujekids, a local dynasty in the little Anatolian village of Divrii. Continue on to Balikli Kaplica, a thermal spring home to tiny fish that can survive in hot water and are famed for curing skin conditions. Continue on to Kangal so we may view the renowned, enormous Kangal Dogs.

We will go by car to Divrigi, an area of Anatolia that the Turks captured at the start of the 11th century. DAY 11    SIVAS – HATTUSA – CAPPADOCIA

On Day 11, we will go to Hatussa, which served as the late Bronze Age capital of the Hittite Empire. Within the expansive Kzlrmak River loop, its remains are located close to the present-day Turkish town of Boazkale. In 1986, Hattusa was included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The 4000-year-old Hittite City of Hatussa with its Lion Gate, magnificent Temple, and several outstanding structures may be seen there.

Then, take a trip to Yazilikaya, where two rock clefts—one to the northeast and the other to the east—form open-air galleries naturally. The Hittites revered this location. It was created within a cluster of rock outcrops and had two primary chambers. The Hittite pantheon’s gods are shown in the rock reliefs of Chambers A and B, which are still very spectacular today. Drive forward to Cappadocia.

DAY 12    CAPPADOCIA – ISTANBUL

Before visiting the carpet factory, where you will witness a wide variety of renowned Turkish carpets, you may choose to take a hot air balloon journey in the early morning in Cappadocia. We’ll go to the Underground City, which can accommodate up to 20,000 people and is renowned for its size. Before reaching Avanos, the center of Cappadocia’s pottery industry, we will also see the Derbent Valley, which is renowned for its many distinctive rock formations. We will see Goreme Town and Goreme View Point, home to the famed Uchisar Citadel and cave churches with exquisite carvings in huge rocks. Before spending the night in Cappadocia, explore the Pigeon Valley, which is home to several artificial pigeon homes, and pay a visit to the Turquoise Factory. We will take an evening flight to Istanbul.

DAY 13    ISTANBUL

From the Istanbul Airport, we will check-in and have a delicious breakfast there. In Turkey, you will go to locations with a rich religious and historical past. Our first visit will be to the Blue Mosque, one of Turkey’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1617, it was built. The Hippodrome of Constantinople, which was the center of social and athletic events in ancient Constantinople, will also be visible to you. We’ll spend the day in the Topkapi after visiting the Hagia Sophia Mosque. It is well known for its beautiful architecture and valuables, which contain holy relics that are the belongings of various prophets, such as the Staff of Moses and a few other prophetic artifacts (PBUH). We’ll have local at a great local restaurant at the conclusion of the trip.

DAY 1    ISTANBUL

We will check-in and have a delectable breakfast at the hotel after arriving at the Istanbul Airport. You will be visiting places in Turkey that are very significant historically and religiously. The Blue Mosque, one of Turkey’s top tourist destinations, will be our first stop. It was erected in 1617. Additionally, you will get to view the Hippodrome of Constantinople, which served as the hub of social and sporting activities in ancient Constantinople.

After seeing the Hagia Sophia Mosque, we’ll spend the afternoon at the Topkapi. It is renowned for its exquisite architecture and treasures, which include Holy Relics that are the personal effects of several prophets, such as the Staff of Moses and a few items of the Prophet (PBUH). We’ll have supper in a neighborhood eatery in Istanbul and spend the night there.

DAY 2    ISTANBUL – TRABZON

On day 2, we will have breakfast at the hotel in Istanbul and take a 1-hour 30-minute flight to Trabzon. We will also explore the Sumela Monastery, which has some attractive ruins and an icon of Theotokos called Panagia Gorgoepekoos, which is believed to be painted by Apostle Luke. We will stay overnight at Trabzon.

DAY 3    TRABZON - ERZURUM

We will drive from Trabzon to Erzurum, which will take around 4 hours. We will visit the Erzurum Grand Mosque, which was built way back in 1179 CE, and the Seljukian Cifte Minarelli Madrasah, which was a center of learning and religious education during the 13th century. The rest of the day will be dedicated to exploring Erzurum city and sightseeing. The overnight stay will be at the hotel in Erzurum.

DAY 4    ERZURUM - DIYARBAKIR - MARDIN

After breakfast at the hotel in Erzurum, we will drive to Diyarbakir in about 4 hours and 15 minutes. After visiting the Diyarbakir Grand Mosque, known for hosting four different Islamic traditions, we will drive to Mardin and explore the Old City, Old Bazaar, and Mesopotamia, which is known for breakthrough research in astrology and mathematics. We will have dinner at a nice hotel in Mardin and stay the night there.

DAY 5    MARDIN – SANLIURFA

After breakfast, we will drive from Mardin to Urfa in 2 hours and 40 minutes approximately. Here you will get to visit the Harran Ancient University and Houses and take photos there. We will also explore Balikligol, the place at which Nimrod threw Prophet Abraham into the fire, according to the Jewish and Islamic legends. We will visit the nearby mosques like Rizvaniye Mosque and Halil-ur Rahman Mosque, along with Maqam-i-Ibrahim. You will have ample free time for shopping in the Urfa Old Bazaar. Our overnight stay will be at Sanliurfa.

DAY 6    SANLIURFA - ADIYAMAN

We will be taking a minibus to visit Nemrut Mountain and see an amazing sunset from the top of the mountain. After these steps, we will travel back to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

DAY 7    ADIYAMAN - MARAS – CAPPADOCIA

Have breakfast at the hotel in Adiyaman. After driving for around 2 hours, we will explore the famous Kahramanmaras City Center, Turkish Ice Cream & Baklava in Maras. You can shop around in the city and take some amazing pictures before driving to Cappadocia.

DAY 8    CAPPADOCIA

Before we visit the renowned carpet plant, you may have a great hot air balloon flight over the stunning Cappadocian region. We’ll also go to the expansive, multi-level Derinkuyu Underground City, which can accommodate 20,000 people. One arrives in Avanos town, the center of Cappadocia’s pottery industry, after passing through the Derbent Valley, which is renowned for its spectacular beauty and extraordinary rock formations. Before we reach the Pigeon Valley, which has several artificial pigeon homes cut in malleable volcanic tuff, you will also get the chance to visit Cappadocia’s highest point at the Uchisar Citadel and capture some stunning images there. On the last day, we’ll stop by the Turquoise Factory to look at the lovely jewelry before heading back to the hotel.

Spend your spare time on Taksim Square and Istiklal Street shopping and enjoying yourself. The dinner will be at a local restaurant before traveling to the airport for your return flight.

Your arrival at the Sanliurfa GAP Airport will be followed by a visit to Balikligol, which holds great historical and religious significance. Explore the historical Diyarbakir Old City Wall that dates back to the Romans and see the Tigris River, a river that is surrounded by four different countries. Drive to the Kurdish-majority area Adiyaman and visit the 2,134-metre high Mount Nemrut to see the beautiful sunset from the top of the mountain. Enjoy the overnight stay at Adiyaman.

DAY 3    ADIYAMAN – GAZIANTEP

We will drive from Adiyaman to Gaziantep first thing in the morning after breakfast and have a photo stop at the third-largest dam in the world – Ataturk Dam. You will get to see the historical Gaziantep Castle, which was built and expanded by 565 A.D. and has some great tea and Turkish Baklava Time, along with free time for shopping at Old Bazaar. The overnight stay will be at Gaziantep.

DAY 4    GAZIANTEP - ADANA – CAPPADOCIA

Day 4 starts with breakfast at the hotel and driving to Adana to visit Sabanci Mosque, the second largest mosque in Turkey, and enjoy the view of the Seyhan River, the longest river in Turkey. We will have a photo stop at Roman Bridge, which is surrounded by ravishing scenery, before driving to Cappadocia to stay the night there.

DAY 5    CAPPADOCIA

You have the option of enjoying an early morning hot air balloon tour at Cappadocia before visiting the carpet factory, where you will see a wide range of famous Turkish carpets. We will visit the Underground City, which is famous for its large area and capacity of up to 20,000 people. Derbent Valley is famous for various unique rock formations, so we will explore it as well before visiting Avanos, the pottery hub of Cappadocia. Explore the mysterious Cleopatra’s Ancient Pool located within the Hierapolis-Pamukkale complex. According to a legend, the pool was a gift from Marc Anthony to Cleopatra. Enjoy the pool before visiting the textile factory outlet and drive to Selcuk, which is known for being close to the ancient city of Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary. DAY 1    ARRIVAL AT ISTANBUL AIRPORT – RIZE

Your arrival at the Istanbul Airport will be followed by a 1.5 hours flight to the Trabzon Airport. Visit the Firtina Valley, a steep-sided valley in the Rize district known for having people who rely on a natural living style. You can take some great photos at the Firtina Valley and River and enjoy the stop at the historical Stone Bridge. Explore the famous Tea Garden and have a photo stop at Zil Castle and Palovit Waterfall, which is surrounded by green forest and vibrant hills. Visit the Ayder Plateau, known for clean air and healing hot springs, before traveling back to Rize and staying there for the night.

DAY 2    RIZE – TRABZON

The day will conclude with a visit to the Soumela Monastery, which is a Greek Orthodox monastery located at an altitude of about 1200 meters. We will stay the night at Trabzon.

Explore the King Rock Tombs, which are rock-carved tombs of varying sizes and date as back as 266 BC. The day will end by traveling to Cappadocia and staying the night at a hotel in Cappadocia.

After arriving at the Istanbul Airport, you will take a 1.5-hour flight to the Gaziantep Airport in Gaziantep, Turkey. We will visit the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, which is the largest mosaic museum in the world and has more than 1700 m2 of mosaics. You will also get to explore the Gaziantep Castle, which was built by the Hittite Empire and later renovated by the Roman Empire. Hence, you will get to see the rich history of Turkey here before driving to Sanliurfa. DAY 4    CAPPADOCIA

Take a hot air balloon trip in the early morning if you want to experience a flight-based tour of the whole Cappadocia region. We’ll also go to a carpet factory to examine how the business operates and learn why Turkey is known for producing top-notch carpets. The multi-level Subterranean City, one of the biggest underground cities that can house up to 20,000 people as well as diverse animals, is undoubtedly the highlight of this day. You may also visit the Derbent Valley to observe a variety of rock formations and the pottery center of Avanos. Goreme Town, home to the old Uchisar Citadel and Pigeon Valley, will provide some fantastic photo opportunities. We’ll round up the day by seeing the Turquoise Factory and spending the night in Cappadocia.

DAY 5    CAPPADOCIA - KONYA - PAMUKKALE

The fifth day begins with a quick 3.5-hour drive to Konya and a picturesque photo stop at one of the biggest caravanserais, the Seljukian Caravanserai “Sultanhani.” You may also snap photos at the Mevlana Museum, which houses many of Rumi’s possessions and serves as his tomb. We’ll go to Pamukkale with a drive of around 5 hours and 30 minutes and spend the night there.

DAY 6    PAMUKKALE – KUSADASI

After having breakfast at the hotel, we’ll explore the ancient city of Hierapolis after breakfast at the hotel. The ruins of the city may be seen all throughout contemporary Pamukkale. In the Hierapolis-Pamukkale Complex, you may also see the Cotton Castle and the well-known Cleopatra’s Ancient Pool. Before traveling to Selcuk, which is well known for the Ephesus Ancient – Greek Roman City, take some fantastic photos in the pool and stop at the outlet of a textile plant. Spend the night in Kusadasi and explore the Ancient City.

DAY 7    KUSADASI - BURSA – ISTANBUL

Before going to Istanbul, you will be able to view all of these places and snap photographs of them over the Osman Gazi Bridge, the fourth-longest suspension bridge in the world. Istanbul will be where we spend the night.

DAY 8    ISTANBUL

Istanbul and tourism both depend on sightseeing on Bosphorus cruises. You will get the opportunity to explore Istanbul’s well-known square, commonly referred to as the Hippodrome of Constantinople. We’ll also pay a visit to revered historical and religious landmarks, including the 1619-built Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia Mosque. Numerous sacred artifacts, including The Staff of Moses and the possessions of Prophet Muhammad, may be seen in Topkapi Palace (PBUH). Enjoy your spare time shopping at the Grand Bazaar shopping.

We go by car to Pamukkale, a region in Western Turkey renowned for its mineral-rich hot springs and breathtaking landscape. DAY 4    PAMUKKALE - KONYA – CAPPADOCIA

Avanos village, the center of Cappadocia’s pottery industry, is reached after a stop at the Derbent Valley, which is renowned for its spectacular beauty and unusual rock formations. Before we reach the Pigeon Valley, which has several man-made pigeon homes cut in supple volcanic tuff, you will also get to view Cappadocia’s highest point at the Uchisar Citadel and capture some fantastic pictures there.
